Ms Martinez is known for successfully developing coloratura, lyric, spinto, dramatic soprano, baritones and tenor voices, with special focus on Italian repertoire such as Verdi, Bellini, and Puccini, among others. Her students have excelled in international competitions, auditions and prestigious graduate school programs including Manhattan School of Music, McGill University, the San Francisco Conservatory and Mannes School of Music in New York. She teaches in Munich and France.
Ms Martinez’ teaching technique is based on the time-honoured traditions handed down by the masters of Bel Canto instruction with whom she studied. When one hears Ms Martinez perform, the proof of her understanding of every aspect of the voice is immediately evident, encompassing technique, interpretation, dramatic expression and musicality. Furthermore, her students’ singing clearly reveals her ability to impart the musical knowledge she has amassed from her many years in Europe. Ms Martinez attends to individual needs and challenges, and her emphasis on breath control, blending registers, development of range and projection results in the achievement of technical ease and vocal beauty.
Canadian soprano Emily Dorn is a former student of Ms. Martinez. In the 2014-17 season Emily sings the role of Susanna in the Semperoper Dresden’s new production of Le Nozze di Figaro. She also sings Fiordiligi (Cosi fan Tutte), Micaëla (Carmen), Musetta (La Boheme) and Adele (Die Fledermaus) with the Semperoper Dresden, and makes her role debut as Mimi with Opera Southwest. “Narelle Martinez is not only a gifted soprano, but a teacher who instills in her pupils a profound love of the art. With an emphasis on breath and support, Narelle’s technique is that of the old Italian Masters and is the foundation of healthy and beautiful singing.”
Emily Dorn, soloist at the Semperoper in Dresden, Germany.
”Narelle is a very positive and encouraging teacher who focuses on nurturing the natural talent of her students by providing them with the right tools, according to their own personal needs. I have been working on role preparation and audition repertoire with Narelle for the past two years and have since been engaged by an artistic agency. Since working with Narelle, I made a lot of progress: my voice is much more aligned, my breathing is connected and deep, my sound and top notes are warmer and rounder, and I feel much more confident, which allows me to better perform in audition and concert situations. Thanks to her precious advice and patient work, my voice has blossomed and reached higher levels of singing.”
Isabelle Nicolas, Swiss-based freelance opera singer
“It is my pleasure to comment on the honesty, integrity and teaching of Narelle Martinez. She has made it once again very clear to me on the need to open the throat and body to allow the voice to develop with the greatest of ease, fullness and beauty. She has all the skills, the knowledge to create and develop world class singers, as she is one herself. Her Bel canto voice lessons are for singers who want to make their career on an international level. The Munich summer program has world class clinicians who are working currently in opera and are influential in the opera world today.”
Catherine Audition Training
“After only a year of study with Narelle Martinez she managed to unlock my higher range. I have now access to more than one new octave! Through her guidance, I have significantly increased my breathing capacity and can now, for the first time, sing with a fully supported voice. Her professionalism and appreciation of music is only surpassed by her immense knowledge of the singing voice.”
“I graduated from the Bachelor of Music program in 2010 and upon graduation had a number of singing defects such as incorrect tongue position, insufficient breath support, and a closed throat. Ms Martinez was able to address all these issues brilliantly and helped me develop healthy habits allowing me to find my true voice, to expand my range, and to make the sound of my voice even throughout the range. Through the vocal exercises and well chosen repertoire, she was also able to improve my singing technique, legato, articulation. Narelle Martinez is a knowledgeable specialist and a very caring person.”
